Had to reduce the playback speed to 1.5x for this one. Bloody accent. But 4 stars none the less.

Great start to a series! Despite some slow parts, I couldn't stop reading. Mostly because I wanted to know what's going on with the main character who's introduced like a typical Good Guy With a Damaged Past but turns out to be really, really messed up. I like it when protagonists aren't afraid to play dirty, it keeps things interesting. I also liked how he's not a typical hero in that his vulnerability is all on-page. I thought the reveal behind the crimes to be shocking and one of those moments when a reference to a real-life horror is not taken lightly. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series!

This book is excellently written and kept me enthralled throughout.

However I was slightly disappointed by the ending. I got very invested with DS Cody and DC Webley but I didn't feel like there was an conclusion to the story.

I would love to read the next one (if there is one) - when picking this one up I did not realise there was a first book. However this did not stop me reading or understanding what was happening in this book.

I love how it was written with short chapters meaning I was able to pick it up and read a bit around my 2 kids. (long chapters makes this harder)

The violent bits were just violent enough he did not shy away from his descriptions.

A good thriller featuring a cop serial killer with an avian fetish. DS Cody is a likable enough character, but he fits too perfectly into the mould of troubled hero for me and the ending didn’t entirely satisfy me either. Good but not great.

The audible was amazing...the narrator gave each character a variation of a Liverpool accent which, I assume, highlighted his or her status and class...

Nathan Cody is damaged. But we don't know why or how. He is a devoted detective in the middle of a horrific serial killer case...a killer who leaves dead birds and cryptic literary clues at each murder scene. The opening scenes, from the POV of the first victim, were beyond creepy...

Cody is trying to solve the murders, keep his own demons at bay, patch up his relationship with his ex-fiancee...and is partnered up with a former girlfriend. All this keeps him busy and distracted.

The mystery unravels slowly, with some dead ends and false turns.

As a character-driven reader, I was immediately hooked on Cody...and the last lines of the book assured my searching for DS Nathan Cody #2.

Very confusing writing style. The main character, a psychologically damaged young copper, that reads like a posh man in his 60s who's never experienced a dark day in his life. Couldn't marry the two and the result was an entirely unconvincing character with a weirdly unfitting back story and a premise that started off promisingly creepy but changed direction to the mundane at the last minute. And the serial killer was less convincing than the main character. Such a weird read.
