I might be biased from having watched the movie first, but I thought the writing was pretty plain. The concept was interesting but it seems like they took the idea for the movie, took out all the details from the book, and created an oscar winner...anyway my opinion might not really count because I committed the ultimate sin of not finishing it.
Excellent! Reading a book, when you have already seen the film version, is a little risky; you will compare the storyline over and over until the end. I did find myself doing this but found that the book and the film are almost so different that it was a waste of time to make these comparisons. If you are reading this and you have seen the movie, there is no point in me telling you about the book. This is a very clever story that will keep you on your toes as the author weaves this young man's experiences into a tale that is amusing.
I loved this book. It was touching and funny and suspenseful and innocently profound.

Only short of 4 stars because of the consistent and frankly excessive demonization of queer men. Swarup’s homophobia cannot be excused by the novel’s early 2000s release date.
Graphic: Child abuse, Death, Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Murder
Moderate: Homophobia
Listened to the BBC audiobook version. Very good book--lots of twists and turns. Recommended.
