I read this after reading After Christmas Eve (which though it is a prequel, was written after). I rate about 3.5.
I enjoyed the story and Josh's growth from man-boy to man though did find the characters a little juvenile at times for late thirties males. I think the writing in After Christmas Eve was much tighter so I hope that this trend continues as the author continues writing.
There was some tension in the murder aspects but not as much as could have been - the murderer wasn't frightening so much as I didnt get a feel for him - not sure whether I disliked him or felt sorry for him. Perhaps more of his and his partners story would have galvanised my feelings one way or other.
Having read the prequel first, I wanted more of Phillip's story, to see what he had done in the intervening years.
