Very cute middle grade read that I did with my class during distance learning. They loved it!
You know the authors got it right when you feel like there should be more. I enjoyed Flint and McKell and I can't wait to share them with my students. My students sigh when I gush, but I can already assure them I will gush. This is a top contender for my book of the year.
Fans of Mustaches for Maddie will not be disappointed.
My one gripe: I really, really wanted some illustrations. It would have paired so beautifully with this book. But that is a very tiny issue with an otherwise fantastic book.

So many things I absolutely despised about this book -- only read if you want to complain.
Nothing wrong with this one, just not the story for me.
I chose to read this book because of the cover and catchy title and once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I read it in just a few hours. This book touches on so many areas related to many middle school children today: sickness, loss, fear, bullying, friendship and perseverance. The most unique part of the book was how Flint aka Squint wrote a comic book throughout the story, which reflected his own personal desires and heartaches and his special friendship with McKell. Although the two came from different backgrounds, they realized that they weren't that different after all. I would recommend this book for 4th grade students and up and will use it in my college course next semester.
I really enjoyed this sweet book about two kids who learn to embrace their talents, celebrate their unique gifts, and see life through another person's eyes (literally, in one case). It's an uplifting, empowering book that teaches (not preaches) empathy, kindness, gratitude, and working hard to accomplish a goal. Although SQUINT is thought-provoking, it's also an entertaining read that will especially appeal to fans of WONDER.

I didn't love the audiobook narration, but the story hooked me. Good middle-grade fiction with a good story arc.
