An unexpectedly broad look at both the history of Taoism as well as exceptional and well-explained details about the practices of different sects. Particularly fascinating discussions of mystical taoism, magic, inner alchemy, and meditative techniques. Very helpful bibliography for further reading at end of each chapter. I'm looking forward to checking out additional books by Ms Wong on Taoism.

My opinion is bias because this was not what I was looking for. I was hoping to learn more about the philosophy of Taoism and this is about the influence Taoism had on the ancient world. It was hard to follow without being well versed in the religion.

I will probably read this again once I’ve gained a healthy knowledge on Taoism teachings.

This is an excellent, scholarly text that distills thousands of years of religious history and practice into a well organized guide. However. It is incredibly slow to read. I was totally ignorant to the basic concepts of Taoism and now I have a glimmer of understanding. If I ever wanted more, Ms. Wong provides detailed recommendations at the end of every chapter.

This book is very dry. There's a lot of information in it, but I found it a chore to read.

Eva Wong provides an excellent history on Taoism from folk religion to philosophical practice. Included within it are many recommended readings for English readers making it much easier to dive into the subject, info on different religious sects, practices, etc. Great stuff. Maybe one of the best beginner Taoist books to read.

A great book for those curious about the historical context of Taoism beyond the Big Texts. Wong is straightforward and informative. I was never bored while reading this text. It filled in centuries-long gaps in my knowledge and for this, I am grateful.

There was only a part in the classical period that I was interested in.

An excellent overview of the different elements of this compelling religion and one that explores its diverse tendencies quite well.

Reading a book can inspire you to take a spiritual journey, but book knowledge cannot replace spiritual experience. -Eva Wong
