'I don't know what I want. I said that at some point, I think. But it isn't that, it's that I don't want anyone to tell me what I want, or to make decisions for me." - Murderbot, 149

Such a great sci-fi nugget to find! I loved getting to know Murderbot as a character. (They're honestly so relatable; I too would like to just sit in my room, isolate myself from people's physical presence, and devour content.) World-building unfurls just enough to place you on this space survey mission without dumping a lot of unnecessary, rigid jargon on you. Next to Murderbot, my favorite character was probably Dr. Mensah. I'm hoping she'll make a reappearance later on in the series; however, after the ending I'm uncertain. One can hope. Sci-fi fans please read if you haven't already.

I wasn't going into this book expecting to like it as much as I did. But I should have guessed that I would thoroughly enjoy the hijinks of an antisocial murderbot who doesn't quite understand humans. And just wants to watch tv. Great novel, can't wait to read the rest.

WOW I LOVED THIS! one of my goals this year is to venture outside of my comfort in the romance genre and only reading books that have a romance plot/subplot, and this was my first of the year. this series came highly recommended by two of my online friends, and they did not miss!! i truly loved this and immediately went and put the rest of the series on hold at my library. the narrator did such a great job & i really like being in murderbot's head. i'm looking forward to continuing this series & seeing where murderbot goes from here.

"And in their corner all they had was Murderbot, who just wanted everyone to shut up and leave it alone so it could watch the entertainment feed all day."

I loved this. Maybe I am a sci-fi girlie, after all.

In a world where space travel, robotics, and AIs have advanced, an Android, who names itself Murderbot, becomes self-aware. It just wants to binge-watch soap operas, but gets dragged into a thrilling adventure involving corporate conspiracies, rogue bots, and questioning its own identity.

"Mom, why is the fictional murderous android so relatable?" Listen. I am Murderbot. Murderbot is me. I have never related to a book character so much. I understand it. It says things that I would say. It was actually really funny to read.

The prose was great. It is straight to the point and funny. This and the use of the first person really allows us to get to know Murderbot and his personality. It speaks directly to the reader, and we also get to spend of lot of time in its head, which is great. It is a sarcastic introvert who is simply forced to interact when it would prefer staying in its corner and watch telev… No! The entertainment feed, sorry.

The other characters were also pretty compelling even though we do not get to know them that much (Mensah is MOTHER).

So, why not 5 stars? Well, I thought it was a little bit too simplistic and predictable. The story hit all the points and themes expected.
Android gains consciousness. Meets loveable humans. Is first distant, then starts liking them. Has to save them. Makes fun of humans and their weird ideas.
We have seen this before. I was waiting for something more. The mystery also went by way too fast.

I still loved it.
