A lovely short book that I’d recommend to anyone a) because it’s good and b) because it takes less than an hour to read.

I’ve seen a few reviews saying the way it’s pieced together is clunky and makes it hard to read but I think that it’s actually part of its beauty. The book highlights how piercingly sharp memories can be whilst not necessarily being painful, just dull and perhaps leaving you numb. Similarly, the jumping between times and people with no clear indication of what’s being spoken about mirrors the way the brain works. Memories are triggered by the strangest of things and our thoughts are rarely linked together coherently. In that sense I loved that the format of this book was reflective of the subject matter. I can see that it perhaps makes for an uncomfortable read but when you consider it to be an intentional choice of the author, I think that makes it easier and somewhat impressive.

Additionally, the writing is ‘lightly profound’. By that I mean, it isn’t heavy or philosophical but it’s still enlightening and thought provoking. I appreciated this for finding sentences that resonated with me and made me feel in tune with our protagonist.

Took away one star because I feel like this could be better situated in a collection of short stories and some of the dialogue fell short of the talent clearly displayed by the rest of the writing.

i thought the narration style was a little difficult to follow but i think i’m in the minority opinion for that
a well written novella about a young woman who isn’t driven by anything particular in life but is perfectly fine with that
i liked the writing style and the brevity of the work:)
3 stars? 3.5?
