“What shall we do?” INDEED!
This story has taken some drastic and unforeseen turns. I have so many questions and at every turn I am continually impressed. One of the best things throughout this series are the strong female friendships that are found and forged. The bonds of heritage, family, found family, and destiny all intertwine so beautifully. I will be highly anticipating book 4 whenever it happens to release. 🤩

My GOD this was good - how it opened up the world more, how Bree learnt more about her powers/dealt with the fallout of her decisions, Sel's storyline as he deals with the fallout of the last book - it was all incredible. AND THAT ENDING!!!! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!

This book was everything I wanted from it and more. I can’t express in words how Tracy Deonn continues to exceed my expectations. Everything she has done with this story up to this point has not only been fulfilling to read as a young Black woman who enjoys fantasy, but also as someone who has been with this series since it started in 2020 and has been able to see it progress into something I never would’ve imagined.
The entire point of this book was to explore Bree’s feelings and trauma from the start of this series until now, and how that has impacted the way she not only sees herself but also the path she was put on. I think her character has finally come into her own by figuring out that she is as powerful as everyone says she is, she just had to overcome the guilt she was feeling from how she was using that power. This arc for Bree was definitely needed before getting to the finale of the series.
I also loved that we got several other characters’ POVs, and with that their own mini character arcs. William and Mariah have always been some of my favorites from the series, but I love that this story highlights their struggles as well and how they also need to find ways to not only overcome them but also acknowledge them in order to move forward. I love what Deonn does with the side characters of this series by making them whole and grounded in their own problems. It makes them more dimensional and more attached to the story.
As for the romance…I have never seen a love triangle this messy in my life. And it’s not even messy because of how the characters are handling it. It’s just the circumstances they have been put in. This book being mostly Nick and Bree focused was to be expected since the previous book was about Sel and Bree. I think the way their relationship was handled in this book was so fascinating because they’re basically relearning how to be together again after all the stuff they’ve been through. The tension throughout their scenes had me in a chokehold. It was SO GOOD! I think one of my favorite parts of this book is actually getting to know Nicholas more as a character, which is crazy because we barely got any chapters with his POV. I just think compared to the first book, this book highlights different aspects of his personality that make him feel more real as opposed to just the golden boy archetype. His own arc of having to break down the system he wasn’t just learned to respect and worship but also be worshipped by it was so well written. You can tell he wants to destroy The Order because he genuinely feel like everything they’re doing is wrong, not just because of his love for Bree or his own traumatic experiences. As someone who has always liked Nick, I can confidently say this book made me absolutely adore him.
Selwyn Kane…I have no words. To barely be in the book and have that much of an impact…so iconic. He will always be loved by me.
The one thing about this book that I didn’t particularly enjoy was the pacing. Because of the several POVs and the time jumps, it progression of the story felt kind of choppy at times.
Overall though, I loved it. I need the fourth book expeditiously.
