This is my favorite series ever and it's not even complete yet!
She has built an amazing world with well rounded characters.

I continue to love these characters and I continue to be intrigued by where Deonn is taking the plot. For the third book in a series, this felt unecessarily long and very slowly paced, which hampered a story that I generally enjoyed. I hope that the next book is better paced because a good portion of this book felt unecessarily long and like it could have been cut down.

This is the 3rd book in the Legendborn Series, and while nostalgia brought me here, I think the YA love drama is what’s going to dissuade me from reading the next books to come from this series.

When the series started, it was fresh and dripped with cool magical elements. I really loved the way Tracey Deonn was able to create a world within a human, current world. The concept, and lineage to King Arthur are also really solid. But I did not like the romance between Sel and Bree, nor the romance between Nick and Bree. Tracey Deonn even said in an interview, that she “loves mess” and loved that there was this pretty awful love triangle between the 3 main characters. My opinion is that the romance literally drags down the ENTIRE series, and it would be better off without the obnoxiously long-winded paragraphs about Bree’s romance and infatuation with them. And I’m not exaggerating when I say the paragraphs are VERY long winded.

More importantly, the annoying romance takes away from the actual story, of Bree being Legendborn and that’s MUCH more interesting!! Honestly, who cares if her heart beats for both Nick and Sel?! WHO’S IDEA WAS IT TO FOCUS SO HARD ON THE ROMANCE IN OATHBOUND?!?! BECAUSE IT WAS AWFUL AND FULL OF ANGST!

The amount of times I found myself rolling my eyes, and fast forwarding through those annoying “I could feel his breath against my ear before he whispered” was too many times to count! I preferred Mariah’s point of view, and Williams because their primary focus was about finding Bree. It was truly a struggle trying to get through the slow dip in the book -which lasted longer than it should have- and I also don’t understand why there are SO MANY characters we have to focus on because they all have different lineages, and it’s a clusterfu** a lot of the time, just trying to remember why they’re important to the story.

On top of that, Bree is quite annoying herself and I’m waiting for her to mature and grow up faster than the series will allow. Because of this, many of her choices (in my opinion) are not sound, or logical. The other characters joke about how impulsive she is, and I wish Bree was able to actually take some accountability and responsibility for her actions, instead of backtracking with regret, far later in the story. It’s not an endearing quality and quite frankly, I almost DNF’d this book a couple of times for that and the romance reason.

And to add the cherry on top, Bree somehow
encapsulates Erebus/the shadow king/the soul hunter, even though he’s been training her for months, so how did he not see that coming??? And then Bree tries to make a fair bargain with him? To then decide to take a piece of her soul back, in exchange for letting Alice die????
Not only does that not make any actually sense, then suddenly Sel finds them and touches the crown to find out that he’s the direct descendant, so he’s surprisingly able to touch and hold the crown? I need things to make better sense!

Major pro: I did enjoy hearing other voices in the audiobook besides Joniece Abbott-Pratt, and it was a nice way to break up the perspectives! I also really loved the focus on Mariah because she is a root crafter and medium who’s able to talk to the dead ancestors.

So, with all of that being said, I do not think I’m going to continue the series. If I do, I would love to read it wrapped up. But if there’s going to be 5 more books, then I’m out. There was a lot more info-dumping but not enough recap that made much sense.

After reading and enjoying the previous books in this series, I wanted to continue.
“Oathbound” is book three in the Legendborn series. Bree Matthew’s has severed her connection to her ancestors and has turned away from the order and all of her friends. This was all an effort to keep herself and her loved ones safe, but in doing so, she made a bargain with the Shadow King. Now, she must do whatever he asks, and hope that she can figure out a way back to her friends.
This novel was rife with conflict and adventure. I love that as the series progresses, we get more and more of the King Arthur story.
Bree is in a very sticky situation, and she does not know if she will be able to break free of the Shadow King. That entire arch was riveting to read because everything felt high stakes. I do think most of the story felt a little drawn out, and had more detail than necessary, which did make the novel feel like it was dragging a little bit at points.
The ending of this book is absolutely wild, and I can not wait to see what happens next in this series!!
If you are thinking about picking up this series, I HIGHLY recommend doing so.
