the beginning was really boring and slow, after the halfway point things did speed up and get more interesting, but i don't think i'll continue this series.

It's an interesting first book of a series but it didn't grab me as much as it seems to have grabbed a lot of other people. I felt the "bigger picture" parts were introduced too early and kept me from being too engaged with the main story. But, there's some interesting ideas and decent writing here, so I'll try at least the next one.
Dnf.

A solid little story with real-feeling characters, good plot beats, and a world that feels different and full of possibilities.
My impression of modern genre fiction is that it's primarily political diatribe or cringey fan fiction. So it's nice to see a book that's fun, but with no annoying writing tics, no cringey romance or sex, no bad dialog, and no bloated page count. Lindon is a little bit of a Mary Sue, but it doesn't annoy me for some reason. Maybe winning every conflict through luck and trickery feels less "overpowered" than superior combat ability, having all relevant knowledge, and "all members of the opposite sex love me"?
I'm curious if the series gets formulaic; the "moving up through the ranks" plot is an easy fit for video games, but harder to pull off for a book series. But, I think I will check out the sequel (unusual for me these days).
3.5 stars

I liked this first book even more on the reread knowing some of what's in store for Lindon.

We’re off on an adventure! This reads like a prologue to the epic journey our ultra-weak hero undertakes to meet his destiny, and (of course) find his true power along the way.

This review is really for books 1-11, which I read straight through in just over a week. So obviously I find this series amazing and incredibly addictive. Generally each book is better than the last, though I think Underlord, Uncrowned, and Wintersteel are probably my favorites. Overall, I like this series because it has incredible character development, and the scope of the problems confronted by the characters grows really nicely with their power. Things almost never slow down, and I had a difficult time forcing myself to stop reading for less important things like 'work' or 'sleep'.
