a few yikes moments of fatphobia and racism, but the teachings are there and so sound. this book was really helpful in a tough time — an important reminder to befriend what’s here.

This text is very accessible, enjoyable (she's funny!), and thought provoking, a map to being comfortable in this moment, exactly where I am, as I am. A book I'll turn to over and over again, like a good and incredibly wise friend.

Still finding the slogans a little obtuse but her explanations often hit the nail on the head for me.

“These teachings are elusive, even though they seem so concrete: if it hurts, breathe in it; if it’s pleasant, send it out.”

Everyone should read Pema Chödrön. Everyone. Whether you identify with Buddhist teachings or not, her gentle words light a path of radical self-compassion and relinquishing control, which can benefit anyone. This book felt a little more didactic than When Thjngs Fall Apart, so I didn’t enjoy it quite as much, but I still received just as many nuggets of perspective-shifting wisdom.
