Embracing Yoga's Roots by Susanna Barkataki is an incredibly informative and beautiful book that is a must read for ANYONE who is interested in yoga. There is so much more to yoga than the Western world will have us believe, and I will forever be grateful to have read this book for the start of my yoga journey.

“Super insightful guide to deepen your yoga practice. For anyone wanting to learn more about yoga and implement mindfulness into your everyday life.”

I was looking for more of a narrative of yoga’s origins and how that manifests into practices of today, or even just explorations of the vedic texts. It was more reflective, though, and a lot of the actual historic (and thought experiment) examples were repeated throughout the book. Yoga’s history is important topic, though, and something that I do want to know more about.

I thought this was incredible and well-written. Susanna warmly and openly calls-in yoga practitioners to explore the intersections of power, privilege, colonialism, and how that shows up in the yoga practices we're familiar with today. This book gave me essential 'tools' that I can use to honor, rather than appropriate, yoga's roots... and pass those practices along to my students.

Anyone who practices yoga should read this book, and keep up with Susanna’s blog. The messages in this book are SO important, and Susanna writes with such care for the community she envisions.

Important topic and an excellent introduction - would be great as a jumping off point in an ongoing discussion group or YTT... But as a book by itself could benefit from sharing more information & detail, getting into any sort of depth on the topic, and careful analyzation of concepts it introduces, instead of repeating basics & asking super general questions without any further unpacking.
