A lovely little filler between Foul Lady Fortune and Foul Heart Huntsman, we meet up again with Juliette and Roma after the end of the original duology and get also a peek into what Benedict and Marshall have been up to. This was a nice boost of serotonin between the heavier novels. The stories being novellas means the pacing was slightly faster, of course, but they tied well into the recent novels.

Overall, these were just what I wanted and needed to read right now. I read these two novellas in one week and this is still with me taking my time to savor them. They made me excited to read again!!!

I love Miss Chloe Gong and everything she writes. I cannot wait to see her & read Foul Heart Huntsman at the end of September!

I missed Roma and Juliette so freaking much!!!! They are my favorite book couple and I stand by this statement.

SPOILERS BELOW & IN PICTURES

A Foul Thing - Roma & Juliette’s Novella

I love Roma and Juliette’s banter in this book. You see a lot of it in the duology, but the difference is in this, they kiss to make up or just go home together. I’m so happy they get this happy ending.
So wait… Juliette sent that letter in FLF?!? And they’re the weapons dealers that Rosalind had heard of?!? Did they live?! I guess I have to wait until September to find out.

This Foul Murder - Benedikt & Marshall’s Novella

Benedikt and Marshall got MARRIED?! I’m so happy for them. I missed them too. They met Mila, who was not keeping it on the down low that she met Roma!!! Like girl be quiet!!! Hopefully they can get to Lourens, get a cure, and Rosalind can give it to Orion.

This was surprisingly cozy and lighthearted, despite all of the dark topics and content warnings. Juliette and Roma are no longer the same characters as they were in the These Violent Delights duology, but I'm glad they're living the lives they deserve, as well as Benedikt and Marshall. The banter is hilarious.

Favorite Quote:
"Hey," Juliette said. The word was muffled because she hadn't bothered drawing away first.
"Hmm?"
"We should have a fight."
Roma made a perplexed sound, thinking he had misheard her. "I beg your pardon?" (Pg. 91)

HAHAHAHAHHAAHAH 笑死了!

A Foul Thing
I love this domestic novella. I think every author needs to do something like this. It was really nice to see how Roma and Juliette were living. I love their relationship so much (when is it my turn?) I liked seeing how their whole mystery plot ties into the plot of Foul Lady Fortune. It was great seeing how everything connected. I really enjoyed it. I’m excited to read the next novella.

This Foul Murder
I think it should be a requirement for every author to release domestic novellas about their characters. I loved seeing what Benedikt and Marshall were up to. I love their characters so much! I also liked seeing how everything was connected at the end. It was cool to see Mila come back (even if it was a bit confusing). I’m excited to see what their role is in Foul Heart Huntsman. Maybe we’ll get a pov from them? Please? I need more!

Overall, I really enjoyed both of these novellas. I loved seeing what my favorite characters were up to. I'm so excited to see how this all connects in the next book.

"A Foul Thing" follows Roma and Juliette after the events of OUR VIOLENT ENDS, taking place during the events of FOUL LADY FORTUNE. "This Foul Murder" takes place almost immediately afterwards, starring Benedikt and Marshall.

As a sequel, LAST VIOLENT CALL addresses several important things left uncertain after OUR VIOLENT ENDS, specifically the fates of Roma and Juliette. It contains a new storyline related to their lives away from Shanghai, when someone approaches them for help. Technically the storyline related to the people they help is both introduced and resolved here, but so much of it is related to the broader context of FOUL LADY FORTUNE that it wouldn’t make very much sense without having read the first three books of the series. In "This Foul Murder", Marshall and Benedikt are on a week-long train ride at Roma and Juliette's behest when one of the passengers is messily murdered.

LAST VIOLENT CALL is definitely not the last book in the series, The very premise of this book contains so many spoilers that it should absolutely not be read before the first three novels in the main series.

I like "A Foul Thing". Given the broader context supplied by the earlier books, it is in turn sweet and deadly, surpassing any expectations I might’ve had for what an additional glimpse of Roma and Juliette could be. "This Foul Murder" has many very sweet moments between Marshall and Benedikt, giving a much better sense of their dynamic once they're officially a couple and away from Marshall's family. The murder investigation is lively and interesting, and I like how well the two novellas work as a companion to the main series, both individually and as a set.
