This novella set included two cozy reads that tie together the two duologies of the Secret Shanghai series together. So much wholesomeness!! And while these novellas added to the series, they feel like they could stand alone in their plot arcs. They definitely leave me wanting more, both of these characters and about the main plot in Foul Heart Huntsman. My only critiques are that in A Foul Thing, the couple was a bit too lovey dovey; since they are involved with weapons trade I would have loved more of that side of things. Also, in This Foul Murder, it was unclear that this took place a few months after A Foul Thing so I was really confused by the ending for a bit. It was so nice to see more of the “epilogue” of these two couples and I am so excited to finish the series!!
Graphic: Injury/Injury detail, Blood, Death, Gore, Murder, Violence, and Body horror
Minor: Child abuse and Sexual content

These novellas were absolutely DELIGHTFUL, through and through. I didn’t realize just how much I missed these kids till I started reading, but gods, I really did. And I absolutely adore them all. They finally get to have the happiness and love they deserve, and I love that for them. I love it SO MUCH. I could try to talk about how cleverly Chloe set the stage for the final book, but like. I’m nose-deep in my Romette and Benmars feels and still sinking. They’re just SO GODDAMN CUTE. 🥹❤️

Mental illness: Ben has OCD, and all four of them have some level of PTSD. The latter is present mostly in A Foul Thing, while the former is specifically in This Foul Murder. Forced institutionalization: mentioned in AFT regarding a side character. Includes a couple of discussions of drugging and human experimentation.
