I thought the world building was fantastic and the sandworts were great. I understand that without this we wouldn't have Star Wars and this is revolutionary for the genre. With saying that I really didn't enjoy this. The longer it's been since I read this the more annoyed I am by it. I initially was thinking this was a 3.5 for the world building, but the characters annoyed me so much... It's really more a 2.5 stars.

Paul read like a middle aged man and was just such a prototype of the chosen one trope that I'm over. I know Paul wasn't supposed to be me middle aged, he's supposed to be a young man. The writing of him was just done in a way that's how he read to me. This is also a me issue, not necessarily a book issue but it still ruined it for me. Jessica is a basic white, girl name in my mind that is typically between 18-40 and did not suit the character intended for the book. Since Paul read like a middle aged man to me, that made Jessica have to be 65-70 if she was his mom. She read middle aged too though, so it just didn't work for me. Plus I don't think Frank Herbert in general wrote good woman.

If this book was in someone else's hands, I think I'd enjoy it much more. I think I'll really enjoy the modern movie, because they'll actually write characters the ages they were supposed to and they'll actually have a woman character done half decent. The world building is already fantastic, so the movie has potential to be fantastic.

2.5/5 stars.
I don't recommend this unless you really feel the need to read classic sci-fi.

A truly remarkable story to be told, the originality and cleverness on their own deserve full stars!

But I'm setting it at 4 stars only because there were many moments (increasing as the book wore on) where Paul's character felt unconnected, inconsistent, and very difficult to follow or understand his motivations. While he held his many aliases, it still did not feel like even those were consistent within themselves... I recognize that a certain amount of disconnectedness was necessary for the rhetoric of Paul's changes, but it felt sometimes like the writing didn't quite live up to its intentions.

That said, I loved the unfolding of a story about a boy who becomes a man who becomes an idea - a powerful idea. An idea which may turn out to be much more violent, evil, and sinister than it at first appeared...

Very excited to read the second book!!
