A quirky, charming and often funny novel. I wasn't quite sure what direction it would take, and yet I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book.

Just okay. I recently read, and loved, Hiromi Kawakami's novel, Strange Weather in Tokyo, so decided to try this one, which was written much earlier (or I assume so, based on the publication of the English translations). This story seemed wandering and fairly pointless. I could never care much about any of the characters. That said, I will probably try Kawakami's next book, The Ten Loves of Nishino, due out in June.

This was fun and I always enjoy modern fiction in translation just for the exposure to another culture, but the plot was ultimately disatisfying.
