"Ours was a strange world, in which whatever was new and neat and tidy diminished in value."

A placid sort of book. The characters feel a subtle sense of isolation and perhaps even rejection from others. They find a sense of home at Nakano's Thrift Shop.

Among the assortment of peculiar characters, Takeo was probably most fascinating for me.

The plot ambles along - for me, for the most part, it was comforting but, at times, it was frustrating. It is definitely the sort of book that you need to be in the right rare mood to read.

I agree with some reviews that this book could have been more deliberately whimsical.
