Edit/Update: After discussing the book in book club, im more than willing to give it another chance after some time has passed.

this is an adaptation of a paul auster novel by the same name. the novel is very good and the comic might be even awesomer but in a different way. it's kind of amazing actually how well done the comic is considering how totally verbal and cerebral the novel is. it's not a story that easily lends itself to a graphic rendering. but render it they did!

to write, or to be written... that is the question...

I haven't read the original, but I was I to this version. Always love Mazzucchelli's art. Feel like there's a lot of layers here, wish I could take Scott McCloud's class on it! Reminds me of House of Leaves, and makes me think I should really read Don Quixote.

The heck did I just read?
The kind of book you finish and want to read all available analysis on it. Loved the intertextuality and how the author puts the reader in a constant search for answers just like a detective.
Furthermore the irony of the lack of answers in a crime/detective novel is on point
The adaptation to graphic novel is also quite good and exploits the visual medium, although since I haven't read the original novel I cannot compare it.
I definitely recommendot. Although the novel makes good use of postmodernist techniques so be ready to be confused and with more questions than answers.

Stylish art, but really not so original nor thought-provoking as the author wants you to believe, and the ending kinds of goes nowhere. Would deduce a star if not for the art.

Quick read, lovely imagery. An adaptation of Paul Auster's mind-bending noir masterpiece about an author who is mistaken for a private investigator, yet decides to take the case anyway.

I was a young teenager when I first read the New York Trilogy and it blew my mind. Since then it has come to symbolize a certain period in my life. For this reason I have been cautious of this comic book version of City of Glass. When a friend send me a copy I decided to give it a shot. Boy am I sorry that I waited so long. This is absolutely brilliant. The book manages to keep the essence of the story while adding abstract imagery that compliments and heightens the written word. This is a perfect example of a graphic narrative adaptation of a novel. Highly recommended.
