DNF
I didn't make it very far into this story, only to about 20%. I enjoyed the set-up of a woman seeking shelter from an abusive relationship, and her new setting featuring a man with the power to both heal and protect her. Unfortunately, I couldn't connect with the heroine as she was written in a rather conflicting way. I'm no expert in women who have suffered such a traumatic ordeal, and I understand all women are affected (and heal) differently, but I wasn't convinced of it. The writing didn't feel genuine in regards to how her trauma made her reactive and skeptical to everything around her. It wasn't consistent enough. Over time, sure, but it was inconsistent within pages. This simply wasn't a story for me, but I urge others to at least try it to see if it would be for them as maybe my issues with it won't be across the board.
**Received an early copy via NetGalley**I do not rate DNFs w/ star ratings**

Graphic: Domestic abuse, Violence
Moderate: Rape
I really liked this-- and agree that fans of Meghan Hart will enjoy this author. There is a lot of darkness in this book, but that is what pulled me in and made me enjoy the story. Nothing like a story about a wounded heroine and big, lumberjackesque, boxer, ex-con, blacksmith, haha. I also liked the tattoo angle I haven't read any books about tattoo removal.
I had to skim some of this, but it was really hard to put down. The writing pulls you in! CW: abuse, rape, gaslighting, torture, parental neglect and emotional abuse

Ok, so this is not the kind of contemporary romance I am into, but I respect its qualities.
Both backstories were bad, hers much worse than his, but I liked how they came to accept that it had made them what they are now, and that this is a good thing.
I also liked the side characters, especially Uma‘s cranky boss. Even the animals were well drawn. I believed in the setting.
Most of the relationship development and the healing took place through the slowly building physical intimacy and sex between the two main characters. This, again, was well written, with a nice balance of shared power, allowing Uma to feel potent and strong. Also all the consent. It was very steamy and sexy, but it got a bit too much for me, so I ended up speeding the narration up to 1.75. I was worried there would be too much glorifying of arbitrary law, but to my relief the author didn‘t go as far as I feared.
A detail that I did not like was how often Ivan is compared to an animal. I know it was meant in a good way, it just did not work for me.
I would probably have preferred for the story to be a bit more outside of the „bedroom“, more time spent on finding a way for Uma to take back her life from her abuser. It was all there, with the helpful doctor, the self defence classes, the budding friendships... Just not as much in the center as the sexy times.
Perfect book for all of you who enjoy the angst and the high factor of steaminess.
The narration was exceptional, this lady does good men voices, wow.
