This book is very emotional and has me questioning a lot of things. Backman is great at building his characters into real loveable people, often time not knowing who you should root for. Love the writing, love how he makes the reader think.

A downside is that this is a very long book that takes a meandering time to get to the point. Usually I don’t like that, but Backman is the exception to my rule

Sequels often don’t live up to the first installment. This one did.

this book continues just as the first book: the writing is beautiful, the story is carefully crafted and often misleads the reader for a while, all of the characters are unique and never just good or bad. the book is as much about community as the first one, and yes, ice hockey is still important, but it still really isn't a story about sports. the characters are the same as before, just a few new ones are introduced. it seamlessly continues after the first book, and even though the ending was absolutely heartbreaking, it fits the story. it immediately made me want to read the third book, especially because some things are already hinted at, but i feel like the story is once again complete on its own.

Similarly moving and challenging as the first book, but phew, the homophobia was almost too much. It should have been a predictable progression from the first book, if I’d have thought about it, but I hadn’t, so I wasn’t prepared. The same culture of toxic masculinity that feeds the destructive misogyny in book one, fuels the homophobia in book 2. I may take a little break before I begin the last book in the trilogy. So far I definitely recommend these books - if you enjoy descriptive stories about the complexities and contradictions of being human, but beware of the CW.
