i need to update with my review when i'm more emotionally at peace with this book 😭

words can't describe how much i adore this series, i don't remember when i last cried at a book and this had me weeping. i felt every emotion with every character and can't wait to go into The Winners (after at least 24 hours to process the events of Us Against You)

I received a copy of this book from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. Thank you!

The story picks up where the first book left off. Everyone is still struggling to come to terms with Kevin’s actions and the consequences they will have on the team. The story follows the tough choices that the general manager, Peter Andersson, has to make to save Beartown hockey and how those choices affect and sometimes alienate his family and Beartown citizens.

Overall, the story was great and well written. Even though the author didn’t go very deep into many aspects of the players’ lives, I learned enough to give me a strong sense of their characters. I was quickly pulled back into continuing stories as well as the newer plotlines. Benji’s storyline was one of the most intense and heartbreaking, but learning more about the other players’ backgrounds made me root for Beartown’s team even more.

2.5 rounded up to 3 for Goodreads. Definitely not as good as the first one, in my opinion. I didn’t connect with the characters (even a lot of them were the same) and the storyline as much as the first.

I read Beartown in March this year and was blown away by it. I was really excited about the follow up because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to the characters even though the book had a pretty conclusive ending. When I discovered the follow up would be released in the June I pre-ordered it and it has sat on my iPad waiting to be read since; knowing that once I started it I would be done in no time.

Biting the bullet I finally started it but stopped on page about 50 not because I disliked it but Backman had my anxiety ramped up already. I stopped and read the light hearted 'Carry On' before picking it back up on Sunday and not putting it down until it was done (apart from when I had to go to work).

I don't know how to formulate the words to review this book but here is one..... Benji. I loved this character, he has so much depth that I would keep reading just to reach a part of the book where he appeared again there was just not enough of him. Fredrik Backman where is he now?

Peter..... Grrrr, you made me so angry. Benji's sisters, I loved them. Bobo and his family so much love. Bobo and Amat, best friends. Kira.....finally. Vidar, best new character.

Above all I think the book is about family. At least it was for me it was. How families come in all forms, how family is only related to one another through blood. Families will hurt you and heal you. They make you strong and they can make you weak.

This book is also about the conflict between 2 towns obsessed by the game of hockey and how the fanaticism for your team can snowball into tragedy. In these towns it was hockey but wherever you are I'm sure you can relate. I come from Scotland for me that sport is football (soccer).

Like Beartown, Us Against You is going to stay with me for days. I don't think any other books will be top of my list this year. Read them you are missing out if you don't.
