I can honestly say I have never cried so hard at the end of a book like I have after finishing this one. It’s the kind of story that you know will stay with you forever - certain lines, phrases, characters. I’m so incredibly glad I discovered these books and this author.

This book is the second in a series (Beartown is the first book, The Winners the last), and supposedly stands on its own. I think that those that don’t read Beartown first are being cheated on the character development. I like this writer’s style, and will continue to read his books.

Woof, this book.... I hated Beartown. The brutality and cruelty were just too much for me. But I love all of Backman’s other books, so I gave this one a try. I spent the entire book with a knot in my stomach, dreading what would happen. And some of it WAS really brutal. BUT much of it was also quite beautiful. The dread that I felt made it not a pleasant book to read. But the beauty and insights made me glad that I have.
