This book is a wonderful spy novel with amazingly detailed descriptions. For instance, a pool in Helsinki is described as ‘a neoclassical gem, built in the 1920s, located several blocks from the train terminal. Copper Art Deco lamps along a balustraded mezzanine above the elegant look cast movie-set shadows on the gray marble pilasters and glimmering tile floors.’ With descriptions like that, it’s easy to see why this book was made into a movie.
To be honest... not really my type of book. It was unnecessarily gruesome and sexual at times and in my opinion only hurt the story. I could see how some people would like it... but it wasn’t my taste. I still plan to watch the movie... maybe that will be better? That’s rarely the case... but it’s possible!
I'm sure Matthews gets all the details of spycraft correct as a veteran, but besides those fascinating insights, I found the plot and the romance quite dry.
Cliff hanger!!!!!!! It was so good now I can watch the movie. I think there is a second book? I will have to look.
I grabbed this in the airport, lacking any other options for reading material. It was captivating from the first page--the characters are rich and authentic, and the story was compelling, particularly in our current political climate. It was a dense, almost technical, read, but to me, that just added to the intrigue and made it feel more real, even if it did make for a slower pace. Thoroughly enjoyable.
