Highly entertaining, well written spy novel. Laughed out loud at the different recipes at the end of each chapter. Enjoyed all the characters in the book and am excited to read the next book in the trilogy.

A great spy book - I loved the secrets and the back and forth of trying to figure out what was all a play. I enjoyed the secondary story of Marble and trying to piece it all together. I didn't expect to like the espionage and the spy games as much as I did. I plan to keep reading the series.

Starts off kind of slow. You're not sure that you're really want to keep reading. But then somewhere in the middle, you realize you can't put it down. I loved it!
I had so much hope for this book, but the amount of sex and degradation of women makes me feel sick. Are we still in the 1950s? And what's with the recipes??? totally not my cup of tea
Eine Mischung aus Spionage-Thriller eines CIA-Insiders und pubertären Jungsträumen:
Es geht um CIA-Agent Nate Nash, der Maulwürfe aus dem russischen Geheimdienst anwerben soll, und um Dominika Egorowa, die russische Geheimdienstagentin ist, mit der Zusatzausbildung in der verführenden Kunst...
Die Textabschnitte, die sich mit Dominika befassten, fand ich sehr interessant: Sie ist eine sehr intelligente Frau, die sogar Gefühle als Farben sehen kann und ein fotografisches Gedächtnis hat. Außerdem ist sie Ex-Ballettänzerin und sieht super aus.
Gleichzeitig hat sie eine Wahnsinnswut im Bauch, die es gefährlich wäre, auszuleben: Einmal durch ihr Temperament, aber auch weil sie als Frau auch in der jetzigen Zeit nichts gilt und nur als "Venusfalle" eingesetzt werden soll.
Nash wiederum bleibt sehr blass. Er ist im Grunde seines Herzens ein guter Kerl, der jedoch wahnsinnig Angst hat, zu versagen und mit eingeklemmten Schwanz zu seiner erfolgreichen Anwaltfamilie zurückgeschickt zu werden.
Es entbrennt dann ein doppeltes Spiel, bei dem jede der Seiten versucht, den anderen davon zu überezugen, überzulaufen. Und das zieht sich! Stellenweise war es mir richtig langweilig, und hätte gerne schneller zum Punkt kommen können.
Was mich auch massiv gestört hat, ist die Schreibweise des Autors, was die Frauen in dem Roman betraf. Man könnte meinen, er beschreibt mit Dominika seinen feuchten Agentinnen-Traum. Es wird zum Beispiel mehrfach erwähnt, dass Dominika sich mit dem Stiel einer Bürste selbst befriedigt. Wie die Präferenzen von Nash in der Hinsicht sind, wird aber zu keinem Zeitpunk erwähnt - er ist ja auch ein Mann... Das fand ich herabwürdigend. Es hätte gereicht, dass die Vorgesetzten und Kollegen von Dominika permanent sexistisch handeln, um diesen Aspekt des Arbeitslebens und der noch nicht erreichten Gleichberechtigung aufzuzeigen. So aber wirkt es so, als würde der Autor dieses Denken und Handeln aus der Steinzeit befürworten.
Cool fand ich, dass es in jedem Kapitel auch um Essen ging, und jedes Kapitel mit einem Rezept beendet wurde.
Ansonsten leider alles andere als spannend und darüber hinaus noch sexistisch.

This is a classic espionage novel. Meticulous in the details, it’s obvious that the author has been there, done that. For fans of John Le Carrie’ or Frederick Forsythe this book is a must read. The plotting is intricate and believable, exposing a grittier side of the espionage world most authors gloss over.
There is an oddity in this book that at first encounter makes no sense. At the end of most chapters there are detailed recipes of dinners, soups, desserts, cocktails, whatever. Turns out that these recipes are for something one of the characters was eating (or mentioned) in the prior chapter. I realized that these were being used as a vehicle for adding even more authenticity to the story. If you take them as intended, part of the backdrop for the world of Sparrow, they really add substance to the whole story.
Character development is the real goldmine here though, Mr Matthews creates a character set that are believable, complex and flawed, to the point that you care about them and their fates.
Exceptional writing, exceptional book.

It’s a page turner! I had no idea I was so interested in spycraft. Could have done with less torture, and no recipes.
