I gave up partway through after several tries. I've read too many espionage novels to finish this. Maybe I'll pick it up if I ever get through my TBR list. It could use more detail about major plot points & characters, instead of wasted time on minute descriptions of fabric and other obvious items.

After watching the film I thought it would be a good idea to read the book. For those who have seen the film, don't be put off from buying the book because it doesn't end the same way. The book doesn't ruin the plot of the film and vice versa. It was a really good read and different from my usual books. Would recommend!

I enjoyed the beginning and read it with relish... Then about half way through it became tedious but worth reading to get to the sporadic pieces of excitement and intrigue.

I'll give the trilogy a read...

There are some aspects of the novel I found almost too hard to believe: the existence of Sparrow School and Dominika's ability to sense the trustworthiness of people based on the color of an aura chief among them. But the novel does a good job with tradecraft. Many of the supporting characters (Benford, Gable, Korchnoi) I found more interesting than the main protagonists. The ending of the novel is thrilling. Just outstanding. Great stuff for spy novel fans. If you can get past the implausibilities, you've got yourself a fantastic spy novel read. Highly recommended for thriller fans.

Great book. Reminded me of Tom Clancy's "Cardinal of the Kremlin." Matthews even used the idea of a canary trap, just as Clancy did. Hope to see more of the same from Matthews in the future.

After reading this, I seriously don't know if I can watch the movie, despite my major love for J Law. I just don't know how the movie will be able to translate the steely demeanor of Dominika, her relationship with the American CIA agents, the trauma of her training, not to mention the scenes that were fraught with, "Is this it?"

I read the book after reading a not-so-great review of the movie, which stated that the book was much better (when isn't it, really?) and my library happened to have the digital version available. 3 days later, it was finished, and I'm so ready for the next installment.

It was... okay. I chose it because I like Jennifer Lawrence and the movie trailer had me intrigued. The plot was overall decent. The writing was sub-par. Character development and relationships felt forced. I won't bother with the next one in the series (but I'll watch the movie when it comes to streaming).

This was so fun to read! It kept me on edge and in suspense. I'm not really into spy books (or so I thought) but this one may have changed my mind. I can't wait to read the other books in the trilogy and can't wait to see the movie!

I really enjoyed the character development in this book. I truly felt I understood the characters, and their motivations felt genuine.

There were times I struggled with this book, like when it got heavy in CIA language that I had no knowledge of, and other times I couldn't put it down. Let's see what the second book brings!
