I really like this book, but I also see how the movie summary is not true to the book and would be a poor adaptation. That aside, I still want to see it!
I honestly just found it exhaustive and boring. When the best part of a “sexy spy thriller” is the little recipe at the end of each chapter then something is not working. Pity.
I watched the movie and absolutely loved it. The book is fairly different, and its way too detailed to the point where I got very bored. Great concept, not so great execution.

Since I'm not all that familiar with Russia, I had trouble understanding this book when I first started. I kept going, thinking it would get better and in that way, it did. I made it 112 pages before quitting. I just found the story a bit boring while also somewhat disturbing. I checked out some reviews on here to see if it would get better but the things that bothered me don't seem to change the more you read.
I'm withholding a star rating since I didn't finish the book. It's too bad since the description sounded so intriguing and the overall rating was so high.

WOW - so much going on in here that at times it was hard to keep things straight in my mind. I am curious how all of this will play out in the movie. It seems like the movie would need to be several hours long. It will be interesting to see what they do in 2 hours 21 minutes. I am also looking forward to books two and three. I could have done without the recipes. If you listen to the audio you will get the recipe at the end of each chapter whether you want them or not!
Just what I needed--a good spy thriller. Putin puts in an appearance--without a shirt, of course. Thank God, there are no photos. But there are recipes! Go figure.
It's everything a spy novel should be. Matthews is able to interweave the multiple storylines without losing the reader or momentum.
A spy book which focuses on intelligence gathering and the intelligence agencies themselves.
With multiple threads I found this book more interesting than some spy books that follow a singular clandestine operative.
Well written and way better than the recent movie.
