While it feels realistic that the young, proud protagonist first needs to grow as a person and seek guidance before figuring it out – the slowburn romance subplot, driven by poor communication, is not my cuppa tea. Besides that, and a slow start, this is a solid YA historical fantasy – set in India and filled with fast-paced action, twisty political intrigue, and thoughtful ethical dilemmas.

I enjoyed it. I would've liked it better if we had gotten to spend more time on each revelation, maybe if they had been more spaced out they would have had a bigger impact. So much was happening very quickly that there was barely enough time to feel each one.
But it was great anyway. The world was fun, the writing was nice, and Katyani was such a terrific main character. I loved her and reading about her adventure, as heartbreaking as most of it was.

I really enjoyed this book, more than I thought I was going to. I was drawn in by the cover, and did not read the synopsis so I did not quite know what to expect (which is good, since I was pleasantly surprised). Do yourself a favour and read this!!
The story takes place in an alternate medieval India, which is very interesting and was very well done. The author did a great job describing the scenery, to the point where I would love to explore the forest around the gurukul and risk being eaten by monsters. I loved the characters, even though I shouldn’t have grown so attached to many of them. But most importantly I love how strong, independent and resilient Katyani is, even when she finds Daksh.
My only complaint is that some expressions the author used felt out of place for the time period and how the characters spoke the rest of the time (such as one character saying “spill the beans”). Reading those out of place expressions did take me aback for a bit but it didn’t ruin the story or anything which is what matters.
