Definitely much more hooked on this one. It's an interesting continuation of the series.

I liked the warning of Tyen becoming like Dahli, and Qall's solution of isolating himself on Fyre to learn from Vahlan while reducing the risk of being too like him.gnomeskillet's review against another edition

I had to wait until I was a member of a new library to get this book (thinking it was the final in a trilogy - only to find out there are 4 books so far!) and it was worth the effort.
Developing more information about the Worlds and the relationship between Tyen and Rielle really highlights how their main motivations and drives can be at odds with one another. The first book certainly had some themes with resonance to environmental issues in our lives, such as global energy shortage and sustainability, and this book incorporates little messages such as the importance of biosecurity. It also dives a bit deeper on social justice and the ethics of power...
But apart from all that, it is still a good story. I'm often put to sleep by battle scenes in fantasy tales, but the action in this book is cohesive and maintains a nice pace.
Possibly not as good as the first book, and clearly setting up for more to come, it suffers a little from middle book syndrome, but it's a nicely penned book and an easy Young Adult Fiction read.

I started this series years and years ago and I think got some way into the second book and stopped, though I don't know why. When I returned to it a few years back, I just wasn't getting on with it. So it sat on my shelf with the vague intention to try again at some point. I've been back at my parents for a month and decided to read it because as a hardback I knew it wasn't coming with me when I left again. Starting back at the start I found myself enjoying it and read the three books across the last two weeks. I really enjoyed how the book engaged with morals, that people can be bent on causing the least harm and still make mistakes. How there is no straightforward way to rule and that many inventions are neither good nor bad but it depends on the people using them. The books have a good pace and manage to remain anchored despite existing in a universe with an infinite amount of worlds, principally through the strong characters. Tension due to bad communication isn't my favourite and I felt Qall's transformation into wise leader who commands respect at the end felt a little shallow, though it was justified because he absorbed Valhan's memories . Overall I'm very glad I got back to the series, though apparently there's another book I didn't know about so I'll have to pick that up at some point

I thought this was the last one and they keep on going!!!
I'm not really loving this series. It's got the same problems as the previous book, where the characters seem to be doing things for the plot's sake, rather than what they'd actually choose to do. And things are slow and complicated. It's not my favourite series.
