This has been on my pile for more than a year now, and was bumped up after it was on Tuesday's summer reading list. Her review was "it's very beautiful and well written, but not much really happens" which is entirely accurate.
It's sad and melancholy, and well worth the read- raising issues faced by first and second generation immigrant families that I've simply never thought of.

Simply stated, I think I enjoyed the movie version better. The plot seemed more straight forward. The American son, born to Bengali immigrants and their sometimes strained relationship. This book dealt more with the realities of an immigrants transplantation and their offspring, but I didn't get much of the relationship that the movie explored. Especially with the death, what I felt, was the main character's father.

Not being a first, second, or third generation immigrant, I'm not sure of the life of being born to one. Perhaps, this is why I was left feeling that Gogol just had no direction one way or the other. His sister was in the same position, so why did she have a clear direction in the novel? This was my main issue - a lack of resolution. We're left with him continuing to find himself. Is this a treatise of a 1st generation American?

The book was well-written and a breeze to read. I was left unsatisfied. Honestly, I wish good reads wood allow us to rate in "half" stars.
