Perhaps I was expecting something different because the movie seemed like a comedy and this book was more of a classical serious effort. Parts were a little slow and too extravagantly written and not nearly as much happened as I was expecting.

I heard once from someone, I forget who, that this book is a masterpiece of suspense like no other. It is interesting for being the pioneer of "lost world" novels, and for its clear familiarity and description of South Africa... but I confess I completed it in at ×2.3 speed by the end, just to be sure that that great moment of thrilling storytelling was not there after all. (Moreover, it has some appalling racial appellations that made me blush to be listening.)

Uses racially charged language – especially k-word which is considered as good as hate speech in Southern Africa.
