I had a wonderful time reading this book. I loved getting to know each character through the chapters and appreciated the way the story progressed to a somewhat surprising ending. While I sensed something was amiss about halfway through, I couldn't fully predict the outcome, which kept me engaged and entertained. I'm excited to read the next book when it comes!

DID NOT FINISH: 21%

I get that this is an adult fantasy book, and I think the concept is actually really interesting - I love six of crows, so I am obviously a sucker for an impossible heist - but I definitely see what the criticism meant when it said that they’re all just horny for each other. I feel like the work gone into making this and I don’t fantasy book stopped at making the characters list after each other…constantly. It’s fine for  1 or 2 POV’s, but when every single character’s first impression of another character is wanting to go to bed with them, it does become a little bit hard to read!

DNF. Boring to start, life’s too short.

That was such a fun change of pace for me! The fast-paced chapters and multiple POVs kept things moving and made it impossible to get bored. I loved how the author handed out little tidbits of information piece by piece—each reveal made me even more invested in the characters and their secrets. And the lies? The deception? They just kept coming. An entertaining, twisty start, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing this series.

Slow start, strong finish.

The first 50% of the book were OK.
I was a little bored by the three romance intrigues and would have preferred to have more information on the world and the lore. To be honest I had my eyes rolling a little bit too much at the beginning since I am not a fan of instant love.

However, once the 50% mark has been passed, I was hooked. I couldn’t put the book down. The dynamics between the six characters became incredibly interesting and fun to read.
Each character has its own secrets and I love that as a reader you get to be shocked at the revelation, while knowing that not all the other characters have the information either.
I grew on the characters. I became attached to the ones I thought were annoying at first and I didn’t want their adventure to end.

But what really made me hooked to the book were the big revelations explaining the weird details that happened throughout the story, the plot twists, and lies each character told. I guess I enjoy having unreliable narrators.

Another strength of the book is that Mai Corland doesn’t do “info dumping”. We uncover the details of the world she built gradually throughout the book, making the story captivating.

This story was so much fun. Yes it’s quite dramatic and unrealistic but I had so much fun reading it.
I will sure continue the trilogy.

4 men and 2 women plot to kill a king (which, oh by the way, is 6 and not 5 - though even 4 would have been preferable to 5 because there’s 2 characters who were last minute additions to the team, but either way that’s still not 5) and each of them gets paired up with another when there’s no chemistry or meaningful conversations (just so the book can be labeled “romantic”).

The men are all sexist (like “wow, I can’t believe a GIRL could do that!”) even though the entire plot hinges on the highly specialized/talented women. The women even have way less POV/narration time than the men.

We know who the betrayer is pretty much from the beginning because only one person doesn’t answer any questions even in their POV sections.

It took us half the book to even get our five (ahem, SIX) main characters in a room together. And it’s never really explained how these specific people were chosen and contacted; it’s all super convenient and paper thin.

Probably would have DNF’d if I didn’t have the pretty Goldsboro edition
