I dithered on this one, because the story seemed potentially interesting, with a multi-prong assassination plot and some interesting characters. But the writing is very plain, the world doesn't really feel real or lived in, and the cool is all superficial and sometimes downright stupid. (I nearly gave up when one character was putting her horse in a stable and taking it out again like it was a motorbike - I'm not a horse girl at all but why bother telling us about a thing at all if it's so unimportant? My final tipping point was when a character threatens bandits with a flaming sword and tells them to run, only to then chase them down and kill them because no one can be left alive to speak of the flaming-sworded dude being there...)

OMG, PLOT TWIST AFTER PLOT TWIST. These characters had such great banter! Every second was entertaining, even if they weren’t in a high stakes battle. When they were you got to absorb every second of it! AND THIS IS HER DEBUT NOVEL. She did the POV switching amazingly! This is definitely a fav for me!

I listened to this audiobook for a reading challenge, so I went in with no expectations, and while it didn't necessarily disappoint, that's only because my hopes weren't particularly high to begin with.
It reads like a run of the mill B-list YA novel - lewd, tropey, and largely predictable, save for one or two fun twists (though even with those, I felt that the reveals were fumbled). As other reviews have mentioned, of course the protagonists are all horny 20-somethings paired off into future couples from the start. A little boring for my taste.
The author also clearly wants us to like these supposedly morally grey people, so their backstories all sound like something off of the r/AmITheAsshole subreddit; specifically, the stories with insanely misleading titles. "Am I The Asshole forwhipping my love interest's little sister? " - it sounds pretty clear cut but then it turns out that no, he was only protecting her from his much more ruthless father by volunteering to meter out the punishment himself . And every single backstory is like that. Except for the guy that hunted people for sport . As you do.
Overall, a pretty tame book with little new to say. Fun at times, but that's about it.
