Picked this up on a whim cause I liked the cover, and read the first five pages before I made it to the register to buy it. This book is one of the strongest character driven novels I've read in a very long time. I had to binge read/listen(I bought the physical and audio versions) so that I didn't miss anything! The first sentence grabs you and you have to keep reading so that you find out what happens next. Added bonus? I listened to it the first time while traveling in Asia, which was fabulous, and have since binged it five more times cause I can't get enough! Mai Corland has crafted six beautifully flawed, morally gray, human characters that I love so much that even when the traitor was revealed(no spoilers) I couldn't exactly hate this character because I loved and sympathized with all of them and it takes a very talented author to do that. I had an inkling of who it might be before the reveal, but it still made me mad for reasons I won't go into due to spoilers, and I felt bad at the same time(for reasons I won't go into because of spoilers). Also, each chapter is told from a different first person POV so the reader had an opportunity to get in each character's head, but even then, the characters still had surprise revelations that made my jaw drop or squeal or whatever. Personal favorites are Royo, Euyn and Mikail(mostly because I LOVE backstories like theirs) but Sora and Aerie were equally fabulous and well rounded female characters! I pre-ordered book two as soon as it was announced and it's coming TOMORROW and I CAN BARELY CONTAIN MYSELF.

This has had some bad reviews along the way, and sure there are some plot holes and not fully realised characterisations but it's a fun adventure tomorrow nonetheless. Switch off and enjoy would be my advice.

Moni’s lil’ spoiler free thoughts:
Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland

“You only become a sharpened blade by having the soft parts of you stripped away.”

A wild, multi-POV ride to kill the God king. Each character has their own motivations to get to that point, but come together to complete the task. Fast paced and filled with twists and turns, this was definitely a great start in The Broken Blades series. Key points: Misfits on a mission. Unlikely allies. Found family. Enemies-to-lovers.

I liked it! Fun, fast, AND I’m a sucker for female assassins. It’s an easy summertime read. I’m told three stars on Goodreads is a good review- means you liked a book just fine, but it didn’t blow you out of the water. So that’s how I mean this- easy read. Enjoyable, not a life changer. Not gonna lie, I picked it up because the sprayed edges were so beautiful. I can be shallow like that.
