Was reading it for book club and didn’t manage to finish before the meeting. It didn’t grab me enough to make me want to finish after

File under "Mildly interesting". Good writing, but short stories just ain't my thang.

2.5 stars. Sadly, Munro and I just didn't get along too well. I read one half of this collection a few years ago and wasn't impressed. Now I finally felt compelled to read the remaining stories but still wasn't a fan, even though I enjoyed them slightly more this time. Technically, it's a well-written book and I can understand why so many people love Munro, but I felt no emotional connection to these stories and characters, and I have a strong feeling that a few months later I won't even be able to remember them. Maybe except for "Gravel" and "Corrie", those two were good.

May 2023: Six years later and with a bit more of this "dear life" seen through my own eyes, these stories resonated in a completely different way. I look forward to reading another Munro soon.

These are beautifully written, but the constant loss was a little overwhelming. I recommend reading these in a midwestern winter, not next to a pool in San Diego-- it was hard for me to reconcile my surroundings with the world of the stories. My favorites were the autobiographical ones at the end.

Pricep. Până la un punct.
Scriitura mi s-a părut cel mult OK.

I'm a fan of short stories but I had not read any Alice Munro stories before. I read this for my book club. All the stories had interesting characters, and, as some of my "bookie" friends say about short stories, I wanted to know these characters better.
