'To set things right, she has to be very wrong…

Former constable Daniel Carlyle hasn’t the foggiest notion how to be a viscount. No one is more shocked than he when his father’s second cousin and his son die on the same day. When a prominent earl offers to guide Daniel through Society and the House of Lords, he’s grateful to have a champion. Things seem to be falling into place when he meets a lovely young woman he intends to make his viscountess. Until he catches her stealing from his mentor.

The moment Jocelyn Renwick glimpses her family's stolen heirlooms in the possession of a wealthy earl, she demands their return. He dismissively insists they’ve been in his family for generations, and she privately vows to get them back at any cost. But the law-abiding Lord Carlyle foils her plans, and she reluctantly partners with him to solve the theft of her property. When they discover the earl is up to his ears in criminal acts, he threatens to link Daniel to his gang of thieves. Jocelyn must decide if justice for her family is worth risking a chance at love.'

To Love a Thief is the fourth book in Darcy Burke's Secrets and Scandals series.

This one is a short edition to the series at around about 125 pages. And do to the limited number of pages, there was not enough for things to be developed at a decent pace without feeling rushed. Things felt very insta-love to me, which is a pretty big deal breaker for me and instantly ruins my ability to connect with the characters, which was a shame because they were both likable characters amd they had potential. Had the book been longer, I feel like this issue could have been resolved and it would have been a much better read as a result.

But the book is short, so I stuck with it and the danger and subterfuge made the read more intruiging and enjoyable for me. But again, I feel that had the book been longer, this aspect of the story would have benefitted as well.

This has not been my favorite read by Darcy Burke, but I also know that this is one of her earliest series and so her writing is not really what I'm used to reading from her more recent books.

I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

For a short book it doesn't lack anything.

I love that Carlyle was a constable and not just someone raised to be a lord, that made him very different from most books. I liked that it was pretty much love at first sight which is a nice change. I laughed at how Joselyn always said what she was thinking, and when she set her mind on something she did it even though she wasn't raised to act like that.

Jagger has become a favorite of mine and I really want to know more about him. There is just something that makes you want to know him. I was expecting the ending, but not how it happened and that was a twist for me. Yes it was easy to figure out who was behind the robberies, but I wanted to know more about his reason for it.

2.25 Stars. Some crazy instalove here, and while it is at least spurred on by a very obvious physical chemisty...the story is short enough, and the span of time the couple spends together is so short... it just comes off as EXTRA ridiculous and unbelievable. You might be in serious lust... or could see yourself falling for someone...but no... no... this is just weird.

Typical historical romance. Bit thin on character development as this is a novella though the main characters are fleshed out well enough.

I have read all of Darcy Burke's full lengths and really enjoyed them and was happy to see she had a novella out and I was quite happy with it! Jocelyn Renwick sees her late mothers necklace on a lady of the ton while acting as a chaperone at a ball and it spikes her curiosity since it was stolen and never recovered. With her impulsive, bold nature she asks about the necklace and where it came from and gets a answer that she knows is false. At the same ball she garners the attention of Daniel Carlyle, former constable and new viscount. He was mentored about the ways of society since he never expected to be a viscount and the earl that mentors him just happens to be the man that has Jocelyn's belongings. Not sure who to believe, the earl or Jocelyn, sends Daniel back to his roots in a quest for the truth. Unfortunately, the truth turns out to be the worse kind and it endangers not just him, but also Jocelyn and the hope for a future together.

As with most novellas, I wish this was just a bit longer so we could have had more time to see the relationship develop between Jocelyn and Daniel but even so, I thought the length was done well. The instant attraction sends sparks flying and the action keeps this couple coming back together. Lies are told but truths are quickly revealed as well which I appreciated. I liked how Daniel has been a constable and inherited a title he never expected to have or want and this is an area I would have liked just a bit more about, but again, it worked well within this novella. Daniel is smart, loyal and confident and a wonderful foil to Jocelyn and her bold nature. You know who the villain is but how it all unraveled was a delight. This novella has it all--action, romance, love and passion. We get just enough glimpses of one of the upcoming heroes and I am very anxious to see how Ms Burke redeems him! Lovely story for a lovely price. 4 stars

Excellent characters, very likeable. The very, very brief instances of doubt between them were a little repetitive and seemed unnecessary given how quickly they got over it but that was a minor distraction to a fun little story.
