I started this book while visiting Berlin, the day after seeing the DDR museum. I think this really helped me relate to this book in a way that I wouldn’t have done sitting at home and not being able to visualise the Berlin that the characters lived in.
This is not a happy book, but it is deeply moving at many levels. The correlation of Hans and Katerina’s relationship with the politics of post-war Germany was cleverly done, and there were many layers to the narrative. I will happily read this again, perhaps after learning more about this period in history. There are certainly connections that I won’t have made, but that just means there is more to engage with next time.

I wanted to like this but I couldn't get into it. I didn't like the characters and I didn't care for their relationship. I liked the historical and political tidbits but it wasn't enough to keep me interested. It really just goes on and on like an endless dialogue that feels like it's going nowhere. I'm just not in the mood for that right now.
