An intense novel about a difficult love affair, to say the least. It also serves as a history lesson about the GDR, specifically the decade surrounding the fall of the Wall.
The author truly draws you into the initially loving, all-encompassing relationship. This also makes the breakup painful to read.
But that ending takes a very long time...
The epilogue reveal explains a lot and sheds a different light on the whole story.

The prose was beautiful and I found the description of the GDR history captivating, but Katharina’s and Hans’ relationship fell short for me. I am glad I picked it up though!
not sure how to rate this because, even though i began loving it, it kind of fell through for me nearing the end. their tumultuous, problematic relationship does not really go anywhere but continuous, torturous jealousy and guilt and manipulation for…. for what? what is the point? i might have missed it at some point with all the historical background and the guilt-tripping cassettes and their interminable age gap. while it is beautifully written and introspective, i felt as though i didn’t find something i was supposed to have noticed or picked up along the way. regardless, gorgeous writing.
