I can't believe I was only to page 60 when I set this aside like a year ago. I went to book club because why not. I put it down because I was so over older-male, younger-female, dysthymic, European anti-romances. (I had just read Trespasses, among others.) Some of the club members said the ending was confusing, there was a Blair Witch moment where they wondered if they were having a stroke, and the book was "great but unpleasant, with horrible characters." It is probably history metaphor, so if that appeals and you want to look some stuff up, fine, but grooming was definitely mentioned, so no thanks for me. Not right now.

It is entirely boring to hear two people fawn over each other for an entire book and be so wrapped up in their low-stakes romantic psychodrama. Made even more tedious by the endless pretentious descriptions of music and theatre that unless you had an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the references, make the pace so slow.

I was surprised at how much I loved this book. I do live in Berlin, in Prenzlauer Berg, so that helped my enjoyment immensely. The ending was fantastic, I wondered how on earth it would wrap up and why it was called Kairos, but I was pleasantly surprised. I will read more of Erpenbeck’s novels for sure!

Honestly, this just got tiring to read. I felt like the characters just spent the whole book in indecision while whining about their indecision. The age gap made it hard to care about the relationship.
