I think a lot had to do with the cultural references and that's a personal thing that I have to deal with. But it's also the personalities and how they lack so much personality but their were written to seem like they had a lot of personality. And I just think it was the wrong time to read it too. I was just bored and confused and waiting for me to finish atleast half.

I got to page 21 before realising that if I wanted this book to teach me anything about East Germany I would have to wade through overblown metaphors, fake-deep sentence structures, and a boring depiction of a shitty relationship. I would also have to have Googled every obscure, pretentious cultural reference which I can't be bothered to do.
A bit sad as I've wanted to read this for ages, but I'm not going to waste my time. I need another pick for reading around the world for Germany!!

I'm sorry I cannot. I tried really hard to get to the end because I don't like leaving books unfinished but this book unleashed an inhuman fury within me, that I cannot control. Jenny, you must be a man in disguise. And also, the booker needs to stop doing cheap drugs.
