I think I’m not smart enough for this book? Sad. I really wanted to like it but I despised Hans so much.

I mean what a read. Thematically intriguing and beautifully written, a fascinating character study of a toxic relationship on the backdrop of east Berlin. Erpenbeck's prose was compelling and her knack for the innerworkings of the mind made this a page turner for me. Although I found the ending a bit contrived, it was a satisfying ending to Hans' character arc and the nature of fascistic thought.
