Notes:
- Beautifully written book, both in prose and in overall construction.
- Got SO heavy in the second half that I had to take my time with it. But only speaks volumes to the skill with which this book immerses the reader in Katharina's state of mind by that point.
- I was also really captivated by the 80s/90s setting in Germany and how much of the post-WWII effects were still being felt then (especially given the divide of Berlin). I haven't read anything in this context before and found that the way Erpenbeck intertwines the larger sociocultural factors at play with the very intimate inner complexities of her characters was one of my favourite parts of this book as a whole.

Where this book has its outstanding charm and quality it all the same just loses all its magic twice over.
The premise of the story is amazing, great setting, interesting characters, I was excited to read this.
Well, sadly I quickly realized this won’t be for me.
At most times the writing just felt pretentious and like „Oscar bait“ but for book awards (HA! Might have worked), and only at rare times it was magnificent, but yet still just grotesque (yes I mean THAT love letter writing scene).
I feel like this book could have been amazing for me, but then it also would have to lose its uniqueness. So in the end, it simply just isn’t to my own liking. Oh also, almost knocked it down to two stars for the ending alone.
