“Are you flirting with me?” I ask. Or at least I think I do. His soft, single laugh surprises me. “For over a year now. Thanks for noticing.”
Whew, it really feels like I pick up books for the sole purpose of having a good cry. This book was so sweet and is a strong 4.5 stars in my book. As always, [a:Hannah Bonam-Young|22325481|Hannah Bonam-Young|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1672621626p2/22325481.jpg] created a MMC that could only exist if written by a woman. Matt was just perfect. The kind of perfect that makes you want to start an argument with your real boyfriend and ask "do you reallllly love me?"
I mean, come on - “I hope that tomorrow, when we wake up, it feels like the first of an infinite number of mornings. I hope our days together feel slow and our years long. I hope time passes mercifully.”
I also see a lot of myself in Lane. Imagine my surprise when the FMC is a 27-year-old anxiously approaching the 10-year anniversary of a loved one's passing & dealing with untouched grief? Had me checking behind me for cameras bc me too!

“Happiness is like one of these places on an enchanted island. It’s gates guarded by dragons. One must fight to gain it.”

Lane is in the middle of an identity crisis, her friends are all partnered up, her career is leading no where and to simply put it she’s not happy. On her birthday she makes an impulsive decision and buys a giant, forty eight passenger yellow bus she intends to make her home. Lane enlists the help of her friend Matt and they make a pact that the only thing that can ever be between them is friendship. But soon Lane discovers in order to build something new she has to heal from her past.
This is book is so funny, sweet and cute. I loved Lane and Matt’s relationship and I just love how much Matt really worshiped her. The only problem I had was I wish Lane had communicated more with Matt I feel like it could of solved a lot of her problems from the start. However, this book handled grief so well and I love how it can definitely open the hard conversations about how to handle grief/ anxiety and for someone that deals with both it made me feel heard for once! This was such a heartfelt story and I hope she continues to write more because her writing is so easily read and I love the way she handles sensitive topics!
I would highly recommend both Next of Kin and Next to you especially if you love good easy fun reads with happy endings!

Two very loveable characters. Simple enough but you want to be with them through it :]

DNFed 21% (pg 79) The FMC is ruining the book. Also REALLY wished this was duel POV. I’m more interested in Matt as a character than Lane…
