4.25 - I really liked it!

Considering how [b:Kingdom of the Wicked|52735921|Kingdom of the Wicked (Kingdom of the Wicked, #1)|Kerri Maniscalco|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1578938260l/52735921._SX50_SY75_.jpg|73119188] was just okay for me, this book was such a pleasant surprise! Honestly, if I didn't already have Kingdom of the Cursed book when I read Wicked, I probably wouldn't have picked this up. For me, it's like this book just made use of the same characters but is a different story altogether. More than the move from young adult to new adult, the story became more interesting to me, with more cohesive plot lines - set in Hell, meeting the different Princes of Hell, the progression of Wrath and Emilia's relationship... Sure, there were still questionable moments for me (like that whole build up to the Feast of the Wolf but then nothing happens that'll require what Emilia trained for) but it was nowhere near as bad as Wicked wherein I was truly baffled by the progression of the story.

For me, this is a vast improvement from the first book and I'm now looking forward to the next one!

The sequel to Kingdom of the Wicked was not messing around. Wow. Going into the series, I had pretty low expectations from the range of reviews I had seen. I really get the hype now. The second book was what sold me. Kingdom of the Wicked laid the groundwork for the series, and Kingdom of the Curse did not disappoint. The twists that were happening had me just as confused as Emilia and damn. That final chapter threw me for a loop. By the time I hit the halfway mark, the book did not leave my hands. I stayed up till 1 a.m. to finish this book. The cliffhanger should be considered a crime, but it's fine because now I have time to theorize and process what happened. I could see a couple of the twists coming, but the last couple of chapters came out of the left field and slapped me in the face. It was great.

 (6.7/10) - ⭐⭐⭐

It feels a little odd to rate Kingdom of the Cursed lower than I did the first book, but apparently two decimal points lower is where it's at. And really, I do think it created room to better itself in some aspects by dropping the ball on others.

Can we start with the most glaring problem? Because this story just does. not. move. We're now 433 pages further on, and still we don't have any of the truly important answers to the questions raised in book one. Technically, yes, there is plot, but we hardly see any actions or behavior from our main character to further it in any way, until the author randomly gives her epiphanies. I also do not enjoy the way Emilia, who is written in first person, is "holding back" information from the reader that is pulled out the ass whenever we need to turn a corner of the plot rapidly. In those regards, I feel like the first book was actually much stronger. At the very least it felt more focused.

And yes, I do understand that we went off roading into (new?) adult romantasy land, and with that there's a significant tonal shift here - that's actually where it bettered itself for me. Even though I still don't fully buy into the main relationship in this novel, at least the setting they're in makes for an interesting backdrop to the romance development. Many stitches were still dropped in the knitting of that particular scarf, but it was highly entertaining and sometimes I really am but a basic bitch. Give me some angst and some banter, and I'll happily read nonsense.

Do I still vastly prefer Throne of the Fallen? Absolutely, one hundred percent. But I'm entertained enough to keep with the trilogy until the very end. Let's hope it won't be a bitter one.

I appreciate the way this book really brings the mystery into the story. Some of it was predictable but some of it, I really was not expecting.

I liked it less than the first book. There was so much going on so rapidly, it felt kind of clunky in its delivery. There were multiple parts where I had to go back and reread because I was confused on where the characters were or how much time had passed and I kept feeling like I was missing over skipping pieces that would keep the story more linear. By about 60% of the way through the book, I had just fully accepted that it felt a bit disjointed and kept moving.

Regardless, I do really like this story and I will absolutely be finishing the series.

This book dragged so slowly, so read three books on between. Nothing happened until the last chapter. I believe you could completely skip this book and go straight to the third and miss nothing. I’m a fan of slow burn but there was just so little happening in the book it went too far. I do want to know what happens in the end so I I’ll probably read the third but fairly disappointed with this entry.
