Literary fiction at its peak. Told through a diary like format, wherein the past and present are interwoven and reflected on all at once.

Stevens endears himself to us through his introspection and we come to both empathize with him and want to reach in and shake his past self (which he too probably wants to do?)

Acceptance of the past and and coming to the understanding that perhaps the "evening is the best part of the day"

Leaves you with a melancholic and bittersweet feeling. The first few pages were hard to get through but once he embarks on his journey you start to appreciate it more. The way that even while "journaling" he conceals part of himself that you only really see through the dialogue of others. I love you stevens 😿

This is quite a emotionally frustrating read. Ishiguro did this beautifully, as even the pacing seems to be accounted for the reader to dwell himself within the corners of this story. I believe the purpose of this book is for the reader to find the story.

I was really heartbroken by Stevens’ neglect of himself in service of others, though comforted both by Ishiguro’s beautifully understated prose and the wonderful blossoming of its ending. 250 pages of stifled emotions all let out in three-or-so amazing final pages.
