I loved this book, but found it boring. I didn't want to read, but also couldn't stop. There is something about the character and writing that is very engaging. I really enjoyed the story, very unique.

' I would say that it is the very lack of obvious drama or spectacle that sets the beauty of our land apart. What is pertinent is the calmness of that beauty, its sense of restraint. It is as though the land knows of its own beauty, of its own greatness, and feels no need to shout it.'
Everything about this book is just executed perfectly. The subtlety of each revelation relating to Steven's father, Mr Darlington and Miss Kenton really builds up and is not in your face at all or over the top. You are not racing through the pages trying to reach a climax, you are savouring the beautiful prose of Ishiguro, the simplicity with which he captures this English life. I thoroughly enjoyed Steven's monologues, where little snippets of his true thoughts were nestled in but ultimately buried by the dedication he chose to prescribe upon his role as butler.
' Indeed - why should I not admit it? - at that moment, my heart was breaking.'
In my opinion, even better than never let me go and a book that I am still continuing to think about even after finishing

Spoiler
You do feel for Steven and the life he has thrown away for his work, especially the relationship he could have had with Miss Kenton. The ending itself is so bittersweet, so melancholic without needing to say too much, simply:' Indeed - why should I not admit it? - at that moment, my heart was breaking.'
