Strange little book. If I could give half stars I would give it a 3.5. Would be a great period film with Ralph Fiennes as Stevens.

Heartbreaking character study of a butler who lets the girl of his dreams pass by and also indirectly supports the Nazi Party through his employer. Quite slow paced and Ishiguro wants you to "read in between the lines" to his situation. He makes it pretty obvious in the end, though. I think it raises some pretty interesting questions about the relationship between one's work self and your "real" self, if there is a difference at all? And what are the ethical implications of supporting someone as a worker? Surely he's not just following orders... Nuremberg sort of excuse. But at the same time, he's just a butler, right? Yet Darlington trusted him significantly, surely he could've prevented the firing of those two Jewish girls, or convinced Darlington to stop inviting Nazis to his house. Overall very sad and interesting. I wish there was a bit more action, though. Though maybe that is the point: all the things that DIDN'T happen e.g. playing hero and getting the girl.
