A story about 'what could have been' and how if you devote yourself so thoroughly to one thing, you can be blinded.
Going through the story, you see the mistakes and the 'turning a blind eye' and it seems so obvious but I think we can all fall into this trap. The story felt like a good reminder to keep yourself open to new opportunities, different points or view, and to not see yourself as "ordinary" when we can all be more than that.
The ending felt very inspiring. Shout out the old man at the pier for talking some sense into Stevens about not looking at the past and to continue to look forward. We can learn from the past but we shouldn't dwell on it.

Amazing. The depth of the novel and the tone of the novel are wonderful. Recommend! The subtle humour is also really good, though because I read portions of the book and flipped through the book previously, this didn't strike me as much. However, deeply I wouldn't consider this book a happy one.
