Reading this felt like someone was very gently and slowly crushing my chest in a vice. Glad I read it.

This is not a fun book to read, but it is a rewarding one. The narrator is deeply frustrating, but gradually becomes more sympathetic as the story progresses, despite some of his actions (and inaction). Very slow paced and you shouldn't expect a big exciting climax, rather a gradual understanding.

This book made me feel things I wasn't prepared or expecting to feel. That might have been the reason I 'didn't like' the book – it left me feeling awful. But it is undeniably a good book, and Ishiguro a fantastic writer. Really great first person POV style, beautifully nuanced with class and subtlety, so evocative. A mesmerising read.

Will definitely reread, perhaps when I have the emotional wherewithal to better appreciate how sad this is.
