The second (chronological) book in the series gives us more of Hadrian and Royce, and we begin to get to know some of the characters who will become central in the main trilogy. Gwen continues to be one of my favorite characters, though she isn't the main one. A fun adventure.

I liked reading this book. It's a good part of the series and I loved seeing Hadrian and Royce. I didn't love this book as much as The Crown Tower though.
Now what to say....there were a bunch of things that made me go, look! You would have to read the later books to get them. But for those who have not then this is just a normal book, while I found the little things fun.
Like Hilfred! I did not expect that. And the moment Hadrian has in a later book, well that was explained here and made me so sad. Again, I am talking in riddles but I just liked the little things so much :D It also made me want to re-read the trilogy and go all awww I read that stuff here.
Ok this is where I should say something that makes sense then ;)
Hadrian and Royce comes back to Medford. Gwen is hurt and Royce is mad. All while back at the castle young Hilfred finds his destiny and we meet the royals again. The book has a conspiracy going on..I will not say too much but there is danger, death and foul things going on.
I really should re-read the series, small things have slipped my mind. Alas, so many books not enough time. Oh and crush on Royce! Even when he is insane.

In the summer of 2012, Michael J. Sullivan vaulted to the very top of my list of favorite authors. Since my very first experience with the Riyria Revelation series (with Theft of Swords), he has never disappointed. The Rose and Thorn, along with the Crown Tower before it, continue the trend. Sullivan has created a wonderful world filled with colorful, likable characters. I would recommend these books - and anything Mr. Sullivan has written - to everyone and look forward to whatever he puts out next.
a good second volume with a good side story including Reuben. I really do like Hadrian and Royce. They are not quite foils of each other, but they play well off each other.
