I guess this one needs to be read after the main series, because I have no idea who any of these people are.

I can't get enough of Riyria!

I'm really surprised at the rave reviews here. I was meh about the first book and after this one I don't think I'll continue with the series. The writing is very amateurish and in need of a good editor - there are tons of issues with sentence structure such as run-on sentences, sentence fragments, improper comma usage, and non-parallel structures. It drove me nuts. Beyond that, the story is unoriginal, the worldbuilding uninspired, the characters almost cartoonish, and the dialogue awkward.

As I am reading this series first, not the original one, a lot of the characters are unknown to me. So the beginning of this book was pretty slow for me, until I got to know who is who. The adding of more protagonists, when I am barely familiar with the main three, seemed to crowd the story a bit, but again, this is my second book from this author so I am barely familiar with his style. But despite having trouble getting into it, after some time, the characters became more familiar and the novel flowed more easily. And it was a very good book. I rarely cry while reading, but here I was pretty close a couple of times. Although there are a lot of characters here, every one of them is so very well introduced that, even after several chapters, it feels as if I have read about them for years. So their fate makes a great impact. Maybe if I have started with the first series it would have been easier to get in to the world, but I like things to be chronological so I sticking to the Chronicles first.

I will always read books about Royce and Hadrian's adventures. This felt like a short story more than a novel and I did leave the story wanting more.

oh my goodness this is brilliant. the inclusive of amrath, the court life of medford, and HILLFRICK's backstory were AMAZING. This is the best Riyria yet!!!!!! (I'm already onto the next one, and it's a contender as well ;) ) Action, amazing characters, and the best writing I've seen in the series yet!!!!!!! :D

edit: only critique is Hadrian's reaction to Royce's .... actions at the conclusion of the book. With his heart of gold, it was just a bit hard to believe he didn't even bring it up with Royce!
